GENERAL SURGERY
General surgery is the practice of diagnosing and treating issues in the body that arise due to illness or injury using a variety of operative approaches and procedures. While many such interventions are for abdominal issues, surgical practices also extend to interventions for the skin, breasts, peripheral vasculature, head, neck, and more. At Ramaadevi Hospital, our constant endeavour is to bring the latest in surgical advancements to our patients.

COMMON ISSUES & SERVICES
HAEMORRHOIDS
Haemorrhoids are caused by swollen or inflamed veins in the lower rectum and anus that can lead to bleeding and discomfort. These often form in the rectum or under the skin of the anus. Commonly called piles, the excess tissue can be removed by your doctor to give you significant relief from pain and bleeding.
CIRCUMCISION
Circumcision is a procedure in which the skin covering the tip of the penis is surgically removed. Circumcisions are common among certain communities but may also be performed for health and hygiene reasons. Usually performed on newborn males, circumcisions can also be performed on older boys or adults.
HERNIORRHAPHY
This procedure is used to treat a serious condition in which the blood supply to the intestine or abdominal tissue is cut off. This can cause significant pain and can even become life-threatening if left untreated. During the surgery, your doctor will put back the trapped tissue into the abdominal cavity, remove damaged tissue and repair the area from where the hernia occurred.
FISSURE SURGERY
An anal fissure is a tear in the thin tissue that lines the anus. They may occur when passing large or hard stools and can cause significant pain and bleeding. If a chronic condition, your doctor may perform a surgery in which a small piece of the anal sphincter muscle will be cut to reduce spasms and pain and to promote healing.
VARICOSE VEIN SURGERY
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that most commonly affect the veins on the legs. While for many, varicose veins may simply pose a cosmetic concern, in some instances they can cause discomfort, pain, blood clots, and serious complications. More complex cases may be handled using minimally invasive surgeries.
ENDOCRINE SURGERY
Certain endocrine disorders may need to be treated by removing a part or the whole of the diseased gland. Surgery may be required if you suffer from thyroid cancer, adrenal gland tumours, or an overactive thyroid gland. Such surgery options range from minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, robotically assisted interventions to open surgical procedures.
ABSCESS & CARBUNCLE DRAINAGE
Large abscesses and carbuncles may need an incision to drain them after the administration of local anaesthesia. Once the affected site is drained well, the doctor will sterilise the wound and apply dressing. A sample will be collected to be sent to the laboratory for analysis to ensure there is no presence of any anomalies.
PNEUMOTHORAX INTERVENTIONS
Our doctors conduct minimally invasive interventions for the pneumothorax region to address issues like air leaks, fluid accumulation and more. Procedures may involve the insertion of a fine needle or chest tube to drain fluid build-up, or in certain cases small incisions may be made to surgically repair tears or other damages.
VASECTOMY
This is an effective and permanent form of contraception for men not intending to extend their families further. During a vasectomy your doctor will seal the tube carrying semen, thus preventing future pregnancies. Done with local anaesthesia, a vasectomy does not need a hospital stay and has a low risk of complications.
LAPAROTOMY
This is a procedure in which an incision is made in the abdomen to identify and treat problems. A laparotomy may be required in case of abdominal injuries, unidentified abdominal pain or to ascertain the spread of certain diseases. In certain instances, a laparotomy might be performed as an emergency procedure.
LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY
This is a minimally invasive surgery to remove the gallbladder by making small incisions on the right side of the abdomen, through which a camera and other surgical instruments are introduced. Typically, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is effective in preventing complications from developing and ensures quick recovery time for patients.
ANAL FISTULA SURGERY
An anal fistula is when a tunnel-like abscess forms under the skin around the anus. A surgeon decides on the type of intervention based on the location and complexity of the fistula. All fistula surgeries are done to remove infected areas while protecting the anal sphincter muscles to minimize the risk of incontinence.
LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY
This procedure is usually performed as an emergency intervention to remove an inflamed appendix. An appendectomy is usually performed within 24 hours of diagnosis since a ruptured appendix can cause serious illnesses. During the surgery, your doctor will remove the appendix through small incisions in the abdomen.
REMOVAL OF LUMPS, CYSTS & TUMOURS
Abnormal growths on the body may require a surgical procedure to remove them. This might be done under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the location and size of the growth. Your doctor will typically remove the growth along with some healthy tissue surrounding it. The removed sample will be sent for a biopsy to determine if it is a benign growth or not.
FNAC PROCEDURE
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is a biopsy procedure in which a thin needle is inserted into an area with possibly abnormal body tissue or fluid. Collected samples are sent for analysis to make a diagnosis or rule out certain diseases like cancer. This is typically a safe procedure, which may involve the use of numbing medications.
